Awarding Open Research at Nanyang Technological University
In 2022, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore launched the inaugural NTU Open Research Awards to recognise exceptional open research practitioners at NTU. These awards honoured researchers who made significant efforts to make their scientific content, tools and processes more open, accessible, transparent, or reproducible.
The NTU Open Research Checklist () was developed and used as a guiding framework for evaluating award nominees, refining the criteria for these awards. The university-funded awards included certificates and cash prizes. The awards recipients received their prizes, delivered lightning talks and presented their open research practices in a poster exhibition at the inaugural Singapore Open Research Conference in 2022.
The 2022 awards created a good level of awareness of open research practices, reaching not only within NTU but also across local universities. Following this success, the inaugural Singapore Open Research Awards were introduced in 2024 as a national-level initiative to honour exemplary open research practices across Singapore’s six local universities, namely NTU, National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore Management University, Singapore University of Social Sciences and Singapore University of Technology and Design.
In 2024, award recipients received certificates, badges and cash prizes. They showcased their work through lightning talks and a poster exhibition at the 2024 Singapore Open Research Conference, which has now expanded into a collaborative effort among the six universities. The 2024 awards have successfully promoted open research practices in both STEM and non-STEM fields, benefiting the research community and broader society alike.
