On Monday 5 June 2023, UNESCO and Alwaleed Philanthropies held the launch event of the joint project Fostering community-based development through culture-related TVET and employment at the UNESCO Observatory Villa Ocampo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

The event brought together over 40 participants from more than 20 organizations and institutions linked to the cultural and educational sectors, including representatives from the Argentinean Ministry of Culture, municipal and provincial cultural institutions, NGOs, UNESCO Chairs and from the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI).

The one-day event was dedicated to the presentation of the joint UNESCO-Alwaleed Philanthropies project and a panel discussion focusing on the current state of culture, arts education, vocational training and employment in the cultural sector in Argentina. The panel was composed of Natalia Armijos, Director General of Culture of the Organisation of Ibero-American States (OEI), Juan Aranovich, National Director of Cultural Training of the Ministry of Culture of Argentina, María Victoria Alcaraz, Director General of International Cultural Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires and Marcela Cardillo, Head of the Department of Promotion and Development of Tourism and Cultural and Creative Industries of the Federal Investment Council (CFI). The debate was moderated by Silvia Bacher, journalist and representative for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Follow-up Committee of the UNESCO Global Alliance for Media and Information Literacy.

In the afternoon, 4 good practice initiatives presented their work with communities and practitioners and potential synergies in arts, culture and education. Furthermore, participants shared in group discussions their experiences and expectations relating to existing practices, needs and opportunities within the framework of the project and the actual context for culture and education in Argentina. The afternoon session was the first of a series of round tables to be held throughout the project with a view to guiding its action, fostering the exchange of good practices, and exploring joint opportunities.
