In this modern age of instantaneous communications and social media, all platforms - from the most powerful media conglomerates and government-run agencies to independent blogs and podcasts - face increased competition for attention, influence and renewable sources of revenue. One of the purposes of World Radio Day is to encourage support of the centuries-spanning accomplishments of radio as a medium that draws its main sustenance through roots imbedded deep within the communities it serves. It is to celebrate the efforts of radio to inform, entertain and educate its audiences around the world and to encourage the free-flowing communication of ideas that lead to sustainable human development. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.
