WRD2024 - 17: Radio and Entertainment

Language: English

Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Three services that radio provides are informing, entertaining, and educating. Let’s look at entertaining. Radio has a century-long tradition of providing the public with a wide variety of programs and elements that fall under the banner of entertainment. Of course, music is at the top of the list. At the heart of their very existence, both radio and music are audio media and extremely compatible. But radio has also been a major platform for entertainment via the spoken word. Radio drama, sports play-by-play, humor to lift the spirit and companionship, to soothe the soul, are services provided by radio. And entertainment reflects culture and heritage which, in turn, connect to understanding our differences as well as our common humanity. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.
