WRD2024 - 16: Radio and Information

Language: English

Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Three services that radio provides are informing, entertaining, and educating. Let’s look at informing. News comes in many forms – world, national, and local – covering topics ranging from geo-politics to local policy, from health and safety to weather and road conditions. At UNESCO, we consider the term “news” to mean verifiable information in the public interest, and information that falls short of this standard does not deserve the label of “news.” The rise of disinformation and manipulation in modern communications is a danger that leads to hate and violent extremism. The public should consume media with critical thinking and hold all platforms from national networks to social media – including radio – accountable for accuracy. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.
