WRD2024 - 10: Radio Re-invents Itself

Language: English

Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

When television first burst on the scene, people thought it would eliminate radio which programmed audio drama, comedy, variety s and chat shows… now available on TV with the additional video component. But radio re-invented itself. It was perfect for music, live news, sports and talk shows… especially with the growth of the car radio and portable units you could take to the beach. When live orchestras broadcasting from big studio theaters became unwieldy – radio turned to records, DJs and smaller, efficient studios. And while TV stations still featured “blocks” of different scheduled programs, radio invented entire station formats such as Top 40, all news and all sports - predating today’s cable and streaming TV channels. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.
