The Parent in Science (PiS) Movement

Cross-Cutting Themes

The Parent in Science (PiS) Movement is an initiative that addresses the intersection of parenthood and scientific careers in Brazil and Latin America. Established to fill a critical gap in data and knowledge, the initiative examines the impact of having children on the academic trajectories of both women and men. The Parent in Science (PiS) Movement presents numerous seminars, lectures, talks and publications throughout Brazil and overseas, raising the discussion about motherhood and career. Notably, it has pioneered research to comprehensively assess how parenthood influences scientists’ careers across different academic stages. The initiative also conducted an extensive survey examining the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the scientific community in Brazil. Its advocacy efforts have led to tangible policy changes, with maternity leave now recognized by funding agencies and research institutions as a factor in curriculum evaluation.
