Turning waste into energy: Mathilda D’Silva’s commitment

Founder of the Ocean Purpose Project, Mathilda D’Silva will take part in the session “The Value of Scientific Discourse”, a debate on the crucial role of scientific data in environmental decision-making. Her groundbreaking project focuses on converting plastic waste into hydrogen, offering a sustainable solution to marine pollution while creating a clean energy source.

At Ocean Purpose Project, we prove that data doesn’t just belong in lab reports—it belongs in the hands of the people. With 420 seaweed-mussel lines filtering polluted waters and our volunteers collecting real-time ocean health data, we’re showing that grassroots action can fill critical gaps left by slow-moving policy. At Université de la Terre, I’ll be pushing for hard science, hard facts, and hard action. Because we’re not just here to talk about the problem—we’re here with solutions.

Raf sur Seine: A model of youth action

Another flagship project supported by UNESCO Green Citizens is Raphaël's. At just 10 years old, he took it upon himself to clean the Seine using magnet fishing and grappling hooks, sparking a wave of citizen engagement. His project was showcased at a UNESCO Campus, an event dedicated to young people aged 13 to 18, serving as an inspiring example to encourage youth involvement in water conservation.

His initiative perfectly embodies the spirit of UNESCO Green Citizens: local actions, led by passionate individuals, demonstrating that everyone, at their own level, can become a force for change.

A Collective commitment to a sustainable future

provides an exceptional platform for UNESCO Green Citizens project leaders, who represent the intersection of innovation, civic engagement, and applied science. By shining a spotlight on these initiatives, UNESCO fosters an ecosystem where knowledge and action come together to shape a more sustainable future. Because ecological transition is built collectively, on the ground, through the involvement of everyone.
