Intangible Cultural Heritage Trainings for Sudanese Culture Professionals of the Gezira Island

On 24-28 August 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum Office, in partnership with the National Council for Cultural Heritage and Promotion of National Languages (NCCH), Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom), and Algezira state government, organized two training workshops (TWSs) on 2003 Convention and on developing Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Safeguarding Measures. The events being part of the project 鈥淪trengthening National Capacities for Safeguarding ICH in Sudan鈥 funded by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, UAE, took place in Wad Madani, Algezira state, Sudan, on the premises of the Algezira Palace of Culture. 25 culture professionals from the Algezira, Sennar, Whire Nile and Khartoum states were trained, including 13 women and 20 experts from out-of-capital.

The TWSs were led by Prof. Ismail Al Fihail (Heritage House), and Dr. Asaad Abdelrahman (NCCH); they were supported by, Mr. Ismail Tom, Ms. Suad Nimir and Ms. Amal Osman.

The opening session on 25/04/2019 were addressed by Gen. Ahmed Elhanan, the Governor of the Algezira state, Dr. Asaad Abdelrahman, the Secretary General of National Council for Cultural Heritage and Promotion of National Languages, Mr. Adel Al-Khatib, Secretary General of the Algezira state鈥檚 Government, Mr. Mokhtar Maamoun, Director General of Culture, and Dr. Tarek Mustafa, Director of the Department of Culture.

The first TWS on 2003 Convention took place on 24-25 August 2019, the second TWS on developing ICH Safeguarding Measures took place on 25-28 April 2019. The trainees from the Gezira Island learned about how to specify and classify ICH, how to manage and safeguard ICH, and how to involve communities in this important work.

On the margins of TWSs the representatives of the Sennar and White Nile states signed an agreement to cooperate working on ICH, and the Governor shared his thinking on organizing Algezira鈥檚  Heritage Center.
