"Young Girl in Boots" by Churyo Sato represents a standing figure of a young woman in modern clothing and wearing boots. Hands placed on her waist, she looks towards her left, with a gentle smile on her face. This sculpture is an image characteristic of a period during which women are attempting to find their place in modern society. Here, her tomboy look simply emphasizes her feminine shape. This sculpture was put on loan for the 鈥淢odernit茅 Japonaise鈥� Exhibition held at the Monnaie de Paris from 25 March 2000 to 16 April 2000.

Artist Biography

Born in 1912 in the Tohoku area (Japan), Churyo Sato is considered to be among the greatest Japanese sculptors. His talent was confirmed from the start of his studies at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1934. Following his graduation, he participated in the creation of the New York Artists group, the Shinseisaku-ha Kyokai. The essence of Sato's work and his reputation as an artist were established thanks to his female figure and head sculptures. His work is a representation of human reality in a lively and poetic atmosphere. Churyo Sato was the first Japanese artist to exhibit his sculpture at the Rodin Museum in Paris. His work has been considered 鈥渢he best example of a truly Japanese expression of a Japanese, by a Japanese". Sato managed to acquire the essence of his culture in the urban environment, without forgetting his cultural and artistic influences from Europe. His art is an image of contemporary Japan, where different cultures and trends intermingle and influence each other. Sato passed away in March 2011.
